November 2014

The Jewish holidays are now over and the winter holidays are fast approaching. We are warmed by our Foundation family who always step up to assist those in need - ensuring our most vulnerable members of the community have the essentials to make it through the winter. Our B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program will be making latkes in preparation for Chanukah on December 7th and delivering them to those less fortunate.

Thanks to our wonderful donors, this fiscal year promises to be one filled with stable growth and continued support.

I am confident in the future of the community as I pass the torch on to Lisa Draper as Incoming Chair of the Jewish Foundation. I look forward to my continued involvement with the Foundation under Lisa's exceptional leadership. Read more below about the impact we are continuing to make in the community. We look forward to sharing many more successes with you in the months to come.

Croll Wellness Lecture

Annual Senator David A. Croll Memorial Wellness Lecture

On October 7th, seniors and staff at the Bernard Betel Centre benefited from a complimentary wellness lecture supported by the Senator David A. Croll Memorial Fund, which was established to support lectures and activities every year for seniors. The lecture featured Baycrest's Dr. Carol Greenwood, whose research and work is focused on the relationship between diet and brain function, with specific interest in cognitive function and appetite regulation.

Dave Green

We mourn the loss of Dave Green z"l
David Green led by example; personifying the best of leadership through his innate ability to inspire and motivate those around him. A Veteran of the Second World War, David was a regular at UJA’s Lipa Green Centre where he would take to the phones, canvassing donors and sharing his life stories. And when David Green spoke, people listened.

“David was a special person, whether at a telethon, or at his desk in Lipa Green, calling people to follow up on their pledges, or looking after arrears, David always had a smile on his face,” said David Engel, a long-time UJA volunteer and a Chair of UJA’s Annual Campaign in 2000. “He was such a wonderful and positive role model to so many and he felt, very deeply, that canvassing community members for donations to the UJA Campaign, was a lifetime responsibility.  He will be missed, but his legacy will live on.”

In 2003, David explained his uncommon passion for tzedakah in his Book of Life story. Today, the Sylvia and David Green Philanthropic Fund continues to support a myriad of organizations that were near and dear to his heart, including a perpetual gift to UJA’s annual campaign.
