The saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words but for me, a picture is even more — a memory, a smile, an experience, captured forever. Pictures are also my way of giving - to my family, my friends and my community.
I am a professional photographer and it has always been my privilege to donate my time and my art to many organizations over the years, especially as a participant on the March of the Living and the March of Remembrance and Hope. I was moved and inspired by witnessing the impact these programs had on the children. I will never forget their reactions while visiting the concentration camps in Poland and I know that these experiences will influence them in the years to come.
I grew up in a home where giving was a way of life, whether helping a friend or neighbour, supporting a family member, or donating to charity. My parents, Benny and Faigie Winbaum, were known for their philanthropy throughout the Jewish and non-Jewish community. It was only natural that I wanted to follow in their footsteps. They believed in causes both in Canada and Israel, ranging from health and education to fostering entrepreneurial spirit among young people.
I have done my best to impart this sense of community and responsibility to my children. They too have come to understand the wonderful qualities of giving. This is my parents' legacy.
I have endowed my Lion of Judah so that I too leave behind a legacy for my children, grandchildren, and future generations of the Toronto Jewish community. Giving back to my community is who I am, whether a photo, time or a kiss. Giving is in my soul.
