Message from the Chair

Lisa Draper

Dear Friends,

The Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto inspires generations of givers in the Jewish community by engaging them and demonstrating how they can participate in philanthropy today and in the future. Every day, we’re privileged to encounter, work and volunteer with wonderful people. Every day, we help people to do something good, something that has a positive impact on the world around them.

Despite this challenging economic climate, we’ve achieved many successes and made great strides towards our ultimate goal: strengthening our Jewish community and helping to secure our future.

As we celebrate the Passover holiday, let us reflect, renew and think about what it means to be part of the Jewish community.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday,

Lisa Draper signature

Larry Tanenbaum and Ken Tanenbaum host Jewish Foundation's Appreciation Event

Volunteers and professional advisors were treated to a boardroom briefing in early April, when Larry Tanenbaum and Ken Tanenbaum thanked volunteers and professional advisors for facilitating and helping to structure gifts for the Jewish Foundation.

“I believe in endowments. They are the best way to perpetuate funds that address our community’s needs. It is our belief that the largest gift a donor should make in our community should be to the local Jewish Federation” said Larry Tanenbaum.

Guests in the packed boardroom at Kilmer Van Nostrand were also thanked by Morris Zbar, President & CEO of UJA Federation, and Lisa Draper, Chair of the Jewish Foundation.

From February through April, thousands of people including Jewish day school groups visited the exhibition Benjamin Brown: Architect organized by the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre at Urbanspace Gallery. The Sherry Simcha Menashy Memorial Fund of the Jewish Foundation was one of the sponsors of this exhibition.

Benjamin Brown’s iconic loft-style buildings on lower Spadina express his signature style that characterized the garment district for much of the 20th century. On view were original watercolour presentation pieces, architectural drawings, blueprints, a short documentary film about Brown’s career, and a dynamic hand illustrated map showing the breadth of Brown’s career. The Ontario Jewish Archives was thrilled to showcase the life of this relatively unknown, yet brilliant, architect while providing a lens into the Jewish community during this time. The exhibition received excellent press in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and the Canadian Jewish News.

Update: Jewish Teen Board Program

The Spring has been a busy time for the Jewish Teen Board. Our 30 teens have been actively involved in helping the greater community while developing their leadership skills. Last month, our teens participated in packaging Mishloach Manot for our community’s most vulnerable, and they most recently spent a Sunday afternoon organizing and hosting a mock seder for seniors, as part of J-Serve, a global day of Jewish youth services.

2015-2016 Jewish Teen Board

Recruitment has begun for the next cohort of teens and the application deadline is June 10, 2016. If you know a teen who is interested in being part of next year’s Jewish Teen Board, you can nominate them for the program by going to www.jewishteenboard.com.

Regina Eisenstein z"l

Regina Eisenstein z”l lived by a simple, yet profound motto:  Live and enjoy all that life has to offer.

Regina's life began in Poland, at first with sweet childhood memories and later with intense pain and loss, having survived the horrors of Auschwitz - Birkenau. She met her beloved husband, Ben, on the day of the Auschwitz liberation, which Regina would always remember as a sign that freedom and hope will prevail over darkness.

The loving couple began their life together in Canada, in the Kensington Market area, and like many other immigrants they became committed members of Toronto’s Jewish community. For over 25 years, Regina was President of the Zaglembier Ladies Auxiliary, a mutual benefit society whose members were from their common home town in Poland. Under her leadership, the membership worked tirelessly to fundraise for numerous charitable causes in Canada and in Israel. Regina was instrumental in encouraging the group to establish the Zaglembier Ladies Auxiliary Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation to support the community through United Jewish Appeal.

Regina left a legacy of love and Jewish values that touched all who knew her.  Family and Jewish values were everything to her. The philanthropic legacy she left was, equally, a reflection of her core Jewish values, and she was proud to have established a charitable fund that would support the United Jewish Appeal annual campaign in perpetuity. “Our children grew up in a household perfumed with love and respect for Jewish values” wrote Regina in her 2007 Book of Life story. "They have fulfilled all my dreams, each in their own way.”
