Foundation Update | August 2016
Summer at the Jewish Foundation marks the end of a fiscal year and the beginning of a new one. As I reflect on the past year as Chair, I am excited and appreciative of our continued partnerships, and you, our donors who have entrusted us with your charitable giving.

Each of you deserve our thanks for helping to ensure a strong community today and in the future. Our tradition of looking after one another is evident in your generosity and speaks passionately about your belief in the obligation to make the world a better place.

Wishing you all the very best,

Lisa Draper

TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF ETHIOPIAN-ISRAELI TEENS

For Jacob Ringel, the decision to give back at the time of his Bar Mitzvah was an easy one. “It feels good knowing that I was able to make a difference and help people who are less fortunate than I am," says Jacob.

In the true spirit of B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy, a program of the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto, Jacob decided to exercise his philanthropic genes and connect his passion to needs in the community.

After considering different programs that could benefit from his generosity, Jacob chose to support after school and summer camp programs in Sderot, Israel, UJA Federation’s partner community. “Camp has been a life changing experience for me. Aside from making great friendships, I have learned a lot about myself, particularly that I don’t need to rely on my parents for things," expressed the youngster who longs for summer camp every winter.

The after school and summer camp programs cater primarily to Ethiopian-born teens who have great difficulty adapting to the pressure of a modern society. Many of these teens are struggling at school; some have either dropped out or are on the verge of doing so. These programs help to “level the playing field”, bringing youth up to current grade levels before the start of the academic year.

Mazel Tov to Jacob for enabling underprivileged teens with the invaluable opportunity to participate in these life enhancing programs.

Excerpt of Myrna's Book of Life story:
"My hope for the next generation is that the Jewish people
continue to grow strong and always be proud of our heritage.

We are all part of a shared story and a large family.
Whether it’s through monetary gifts or that of time and kindness,
everyone has something to offer and every bit counts!"
